What truly makes a place unforgettable?
I asked myself this question to figure out how I could ensure that both my customers and my employees would genuinely enjoy spending time in my business. In today’s world – and looking ahead – this question matters more than ever.
Memories that stay with us
When I think of my grandparents’ house, a flood of sensory impressions comes back:
- the smell of freshly harvested apples
- the chalky white dust from limestone walls on my fingertips
- the creak of a century–old wooden door
- the taste of ice–cold, sweet pear juice from small glass bottles
Whenever I encounter similar stimuli today, I’m instantly transported back to that cherished place. This shows: positive emotions can be created intentionally – and that’s exactly what you can use for your business.
Steering stimuli – creating emotions
Our feelings arise from the way we process stimuli, which we perceive through our five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. By consciously designing these sensory impressions, you can turn your office, shop, or showroom into a place people love to visit – what I call a “5‑Senses Journey.”
1. Sight – First impressions matter
The visual sense is the strongest for humans. Think about what customers and employees see as soon as they walk in.
- A well–designed interior reflects your personality
- Harmonious colors, cleanliness, and lighting set the mood
- Your outer appearance should mirror your inner values
2. Hearing – Sound sets the tone
Music, sounds, or silence – every tone influences emotions.
- Pick music styles that match the mood you want to create
- Use nature sounds like flowing water for relaxation
- In Japan, AI systems already analyze facial expressions and automatically adjust music, scent, and lighting to improve mood
3. Taste – Flavor leaves a lasting impression
A memorable taste experience can connect deeply with customers.
- In our showroom, we serve cappuccino with perfect milk foam or crispy stone–oven pizza – a true dance for the taste buds
- Tip: Warm drinks psychologically increase purchase readiness more than cold ones
4. Smell – The most powerful sense
The sense of smell has the fastest and most direct connection to the brain – making it incredibly powerful.
- Create a signature scent for your business
- Choose aromas that bring back positive memories
5. Touch – The feel that seals the deal
- How something feels can silently influence whether we like it or not.
- Use inviting, quality materials for upholstery, furniture, and products
- Let customers hold the product – it increases the desire to own it
Conclusion
The 5–Senses Journey is a powerful emotional marketing tool.
By intentionally engaging all the senses, you ensure that:
- Customers remember you fondly
- They return and recommend you
- Your business becomes a place that people don’t just visit – they truly experience
