Tips for Achieving Goals by Susanne Nickel
Often we do not look closely enough or do not dare to consider ourselves so important. Many of us have learned that it is not appropriate to put ourselves in the spotlight. However, knowing oneself and knowing where one currently stands in life is important and fundamental if we want to set goals and achieve them. It is good to know what supports us or where we can seek support. We should also know what weakens us and what we might be better off avoiding. Knowing oneself well also helps when things get tough, and when it comes to persevering and mastering challenges.
What equipment do you have with you? What burdens might you be carrying? What has shaped you? What do you rely on? As you start now, what are you looking back on? I will reveal to you later what supports you in achieving your goal, useful tips, and tools.
Be Your Own Treasure Hunter!
I would like to invite you to get to know yourself better first. When I support people on their way to their goals in coaching, I always see myself as a treasure hunter. Together with my clients, I search for their hidden and less hidden treasures that help them achieve their goals. Sometimes all it takes is a little push and a treasure or resource reveals itself. Sometimes we also need to dig a little deeper. It can happen that resistances and blockages obstruct the view or access to the valuable treasures. Even if it sometimes gets a bit harder, it is still worth overcoming these obstacles. Be your own treasure hunter. Search for your inner treasures!
A coaching client had already set several major goals in his life. It kept happening that he would give up pursuing them right at the beginning. In coaching, we worked with various questions. Among other things, I asked him: Were those really worthwhile goals? Since he clearly answered yes to that, the question arose why he kept giving up so quickly. Upon closer treasure hunting, he noticed that he was behaving similarly to his father, who had often failed in pursuing his goals and had given up very quickly. He did not allow himself to grow and become bigger, so all his goals were also nipped in the bud. He did this out of love and solidarity with his father. This realization was very important for him because something was blocking him from reaching his goals. That is, he was carrying a burden that needed to be lovingly placed in its proper place so that he could be free to achieve his goals and stick with them.
We often do not find our inner treasures immediately, which is why it is important for you to not only engage in your treasure hunt once, but continuously. Some journeys are shorter, while others are longer. Perseverance pays off!
Practical Tip: Start your personal goal journal. It supports you on your journey. Document results and insights from exercises, important sources of strength, and personal progress in it. Many studies report on the power of the written word and show that people who fix their goals in writing are much more successful in achieving them.
