Team spirit is crucial for success, based on respect and unity. Disrespect towards leaders can harm team dynamics, leading to failure. Reacting to disrespect is vital for maintaining a high-performance team, as shown in the case of FC Augsburg.

In order to be highly successful as a company and to achieve real top performance, team spirit is absolutely necessary. Team spirit means supporting your colleagues, working together, overcoming challenges together, and being successful together.
The basis for true team spirit is respect, respect for your colleague, but also and above all for your boss!

It is the end of January 2019 and the spring season of the German Bundesliga is already in full swing. FC Augsburg is generally a calm, solid club that has established itself in the Bundesliga in recent years. Lately, things have not been going as planned, and they have been sliding towards the relegation zone.
Several Austrians also play in Augsburg, including Martin Hinteregger, formerly of Red Bull Salzburg and an Austrian national team player. He is a regular player in Augsburg, delivering good solid performances.
Then at the end of January, a bombshell: In an interview, he was asked about his coach Manuel Baum, and Hinteregger replied: "I cannot say anything good about him, and I don't want to say anything bad." 
This news spread through all media channels. It was an affront to the coach, showing absolute disrespect towards the coach, who is essentially his boss.

How should a coach or a leader behave in such a situation?
Every leader, every boss, every coach must understand that they MUST act. The emphasis here is on MUST!
They cannot tolerate such disrespect. Because when disrespect creeps into a team, it is always the beginning of the end for the team. There is insecurity, the team falls apart into its individual components, there is no longer a sense of "togetherness," everyone does what they think is right. Support for colleagues - nonexistent! Everyone is looking out for themselves. Because the boss does not react anyway!
It is important for every employee, every player to recognize and understand this. Namely, that the boss, the coach must react to disrespect. Immediately and without unnecessary delay! This is the only way to stop the dramatic process.
For the disrespectful team member, there are only 2 options: showing remorse and apologizing, or being excluded from the team.

The FC Augsburg, as well as Manuel Baum, the coach, reacted in the same way. After an internal discussion where Hinteregger did not retract his statements or show remorse, he was immediately suspended and not allowed to train or play with the team. He was instructed to find a new club. There is no future for him in Augsburg.

This applies in football, and it applies equally in business. Therefore, pay special attention to respect in your team. React immediately and directly to any displays of disrespect. Because only when respect and discipline prevail in the team, can top performance be achieved. This is how you become a high-performance team!
