Body language is our potential - Sabrina Olsson

Body language is a topic that fascinates us, mostly primarily and especially the body language of other people. An awkward gesture, an inappropriate touch, or a disdainful look, an improper handshake, or the absence of a handshake can provide material for discussion for weeks or leave one feeling uncomfortable for days. When we start thinking about body language, we also think about communication, and when we think about communication, we also think about interaction. What is the body language of the person in front of me trying to convey to me? Based on the body language of others, we make general judgments and draw conclusions that influence various life situations. Who fits into our team; who do we hire; who gets promoted or rated well; who do we agree to go on a date with? However, we think less about what our own body language communicates to others. Your body language influences how others see you. But your body language can also influence how you see yourself! There are now numerous studies examining the influence of body language in communication. This involves the impact that nonverbal expression has on our interlocutors, but also the influence that our body language has on ourselves. As early as 2006, Alex Todorov showed that judgments about people are made based solely on their faces within a second. Or Jessica Tracy, who published a study on the nonverbal expression of pride in 2008. Amy Cuddy also published insights in 2013 on the "nonverbal expressions of power and dominance," and in the same year, Nalini Ambady presented a study on "judgment based on purely nonverbal interactions," showing that opinions or judgments are already formed by observing nonverbal scenes, without a word being spoken. All these studies demonstrate that our body language dominates our communication behavior. We believe our consciousness is identical to ourselves and therefore tend to assume that what we say lies solely in words. [ We humans have a problem: We do not want to admit that we are animals. If you want to know what a dog's bark means, you look at its lips, its neck hair, its tail, and so on. However, we believe our consciousness is identical to ourselves and therefore tend to assume that what we say lies solely in words. The real drama is that the language of the body says much more than speech!] Tor Nørretranders Certain communicative patterns such as showing off, advertising gestures, or territorial behavior are innate to all living beings on Earth. These are biologically determined signals: I am stronger! I am faster! I am bigger! Showing off, for example, is based on the need to demonstrate superiority. We stretch our bodies to make ourselves appear larger; we raise our voices to express energy; we jut out our chin to express our will. Showing off also includes our sharp gaze. With it, we also confront, because if we take our "opponent" out of sight for even a moment, it could metaphorically cost us our lives. In addition to showing off, confrontation is also an innate reaction to danger. Both behaviors ultimately aim to protect ourselves, to cover up our weaknesses, so as not to encourage attackers in the first place. This is the archaic view behind these systems that are now adapted to civilization. Territory or territorial behavior is often supported by signals of showing off. Body language is our potential; when we recognize this, we can shape and align our consciousness with our archaically rooted actions and reactions. This will be the focus of the next blog post.
