Consultation for the Federal Government

The Federal Government wants to be challenged by a new Digital Council with "uncomfortable questions." The ten experts are now coming together for the first time. The new Digital Council of the Federal Government will officially meet for the first time on Wednesday. According to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), the Council's task is to drive the Federal Government and pose "uncomfortable questions." The Council brings together ten experts from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the USA. It is led by former State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, Katrin Suder. Former management consultant Suder had already dealt with digitalization during her tenure in the Ministry of Defense and was responsible until May for eliminating chaos in armament projects. At her own request, she left the ministry, where she enjoyed high esteem, in March. With this departure, Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) also lost a close confidante. In her new role, Suder aims to identify the biggest challenges for Germany in the field, develop solutions, and advise the Federal Government with the independent experts in the Digital Council.
Other members of the council, consisting of four women and six men, include:
  • Stephanie Kaiser, Managing Director of Heartbeat Labs
  • Urs Gasser (Switzerland), Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard
  • Ada Pellert (Austria), Rector of Fernuni Hagen
  • Andreas Weigend, former Chief Scientist of Amazon
  • Peter Parycek, Head of the Competence Center Public IT at Fraunhofer FOKUS
  • Viktor Mayer-Schönberger (Austria), Oxford Internet Institute
  • Beth Simone Noveck (USA), Law Professor, Director of the Open Government Initiative at the White House 2009 - 2011
  • Hans-Christian Boos, Founder and CEO of arago (Research and Commercialization of AI)
  • Ijad Madisch, CEO of the science start-up ResearchGate

How can Germany shape digitalization?

"The effects of digitalization on the economy, on the working world, on society, are already significant," Suder said on Tuesday. This development will continue. For the 46-year-old, there are, on the one hand, "inevitable changes" that must be managed in the interest of the people. On the other hand, there are areas "where we can still actively shape and also have the opportunity to do so." Solutions must be found for both areas that "secure our very specific social order in the midst of all these technological developments in the future," Suder said. The question must be answered: "What does our path in Germany, in Europe look like" - in contrast to the developments in the USA or China. https://youtu.be/sPt26is9xFs Merkel announced the convening of the expert council over the weekend and expressed hope that its work would generate many new ideas that "we as a government can put into action." In her podcast, she further stated: "I am convinced that overall, in our government actions, we can only keep up if we also seek advice from outside." This is what the Digital Council will provide in the future. The Chancellor mentioned four areas in which the government aims to make progress. These include expanding infrastructure for broadband coverage and mobile communications, more digital learning content within the framework of the Digital Pact for Schools, and that citizens "gradually have to carry out fewer bureaucratic procedures themselves, but have digital access to the state." Finally, the government wants to develop "a strategy for artificial intelligence."
