Gabriele Quandt and Dr. Florian Langenscheidt receive the German Philanthropy Prize 2017.

The founders of the children's aid organization and foundation Children for a better World (shortened as CHILDREN) are honored with the German Philanthropy Award 2017. Since 1994, Gabriele Quandt and Dr. Florian Langenscheidt have been advocating against child poverty and for the promotion of children's and teenagers' engagement through CHILDREN. For their efforts, the German Association of Foundations will award them one of the highest honors in European philanthropy on May 17 at the German Foundation Day in Osnabrück. Munich, May 17, 2017: The desire to empower children worldwide - whether in the areas of health, education, housing, or building their skills - was the driving force behind the establishment of Children for a better World. As young parents of two children, Gabriele Quandt and Dr. Florian Langenscheidt decided to make the world a little better through their own organization: in 1994, they founded the children's aid organization together with 30 dedicated individuals. To ensure the organization's work is sustainable, the initiators established the foundation with the same name in 2007. Both foundations have an exceptional approach to philanthropy: achieving more together. The focus was always on a distinguished circle of committed individuals from various sectors who collectively contribute funds, contacts, and expertise. CHILDREN has already been recognized for its impactful work with awards such as the PWC Transparency Award, the Westphalian Peace Prize, and a top ranking by Stiftung Warentest for fundraising organizations. Receiving the German Philanthropy Award is a special honor for Dr. Florian Langenscheidt: "Being awarded the Philanthropy Award on our tenth anniversary is a validation of our approach to collaboratively address important contemporary issues across sectors and generations, always with the goal of creating a better world for all children and teenagers in mind." To date, the two founders have raised over 30 million euros in donations for children in poverty and distress through CHILDREN. From the beginning, they have pursued a visionary approach of involving children and teenagers in the organization's activities, as evident in their guiding principle: "With children. For children!" "Witnessing the creativity and conviction with which children and teenagers tackle injustices and achieve remarkable successes touches and reaffirms me time and again. Our task is to provide the necessary resources and knowledge for this and to find more allies and supporters for our cause," says Chairwoman Gabriele Quandt. Today, the organization supports around 250 projects annually, reaching over 10,000 children and teenagers. The main objectives are effectively combating child poverty in Germany and promoting youth engagement. These approaches are implemented through initiatives such as lunch programs in socially disadvantaged areas, diverse discovery activities for children in poverty, the CHILDREN YOUTH HELPS! Award for social engagement, and the CHILDREN Children's Councils, where children and teenagers aged 8-18 independently decide on the allocation of foundation funds. Gabriele Quandt: Gabriele Quandt, an alumna of Sociology, Psychology, and Education with an MBA from INSEAD, is engaged in three areas: for children as Chairwoman of CHILDREN, for art as Chairwoman of the Friends of the National Gallery, and economically in the family business, Harald Quandt Holding. Dr. Florian Langenscheidt: Dr. Florian Langenscheidt holds degrees in various fields including German Studies, Journalism, Philosophy, Advertising, Publishing, and Management, forming the basis for his successful career as a publisher, speaker, bestselling author, and business angel. His broad entrepreneurial and publishing activities have been complemented for many years by outstanding philanthropic engagement in areas such as children (besides founding CHILDREN, he co-founded the German Children and Youth Foundation), education (Stiftung Lesen), literature (co-founding the German Book Prize), environmental protection (WWF), entrepreneurship (German Founders' Prize), science (Deutsches Museum), politics (Atlantikbrücke), and language (German Academy for Language and Poetry). For these achievements and contributions to the common good, Dr. Florian Langenscheidt was already awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2016. The German Philanthropy Award: The German Philanthropy Award of the German Association of Foundations is one of the highest honors in European philanthropy. The glass stele was first awarded in 1994. So far, 14 individuals, one couple, one foundation, and one association have been honored. The award is non-monetary. German Association of Foundations: As an independent umbrella organization, the German Association of Foundations represents the interests of foundations in Germany. The largest foundation association in Europe has more than 4,100 members; through foundation administrations, it is connected to 8,000 foundations. Thus, the umbrella organization represents about three-quarters of the German foundation assets. For editorial use, please.
