Many people think the future is something that simply happens one day.
That is the fundamental misconception.
2050 does not begin 24 years from now. It begins today—with the decisions sitting on your desk this week.
The future is not an event.
It is a chain of decisions.
Organizations that want to thrive tomorrow must act today. Technological progress, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation will not wait until businesses feel ready.
Future Readiness Means Recognizing Change Before Everyone Else
In 2012, I shared two predictions with the leadership team of a major European construction company.
First, I said that precast concrete components would one day be produced directly on construction sites using 3D printing technology.
Second, I predicted that people would increasingly base their own decisions on the decisions made by intelligent machines.
At the time, my expected timeline was 2040.
Reality moved much faster.
The first fully 3D-printed concrete house was completed in 2017. Today, that same company operates its own large-scale 3D printing program. And since 2022, millions of decision-makers around the world have relied on AI systems such as ChatGPT every single day—nearly two decades earlier than I expected.
Artificial Intelligence Is Transforming Decision-Making Faster Than Expected
In my 2019 book Your Choice, I wrote that computer systems would eventually be able to answer fundamental life questions more comprehensively than humans.
Only three years later, ChatGPT was launched.
This is not a story about predicting the future.
It is proof that the future is created through decisions long before it becomes visible to everyone else.
The internet, artificial intelligence, and electric mobility did not simply emerge on their own. Every major innovation began with people making decisions before the outcome was obvious.
Why Waiting Has Become the Most Expensive Strategy
Back in 2019, I also wrote:
Many developments that once took ten years now happen within a single year.
Today, this has become measurable reality.
Technology cycles continue to accelerate. Innovation moves faster than ever. Investment opportunities close more quickly than many organizations can make decisions.
Waiting until a technology is fully mature no longer reduces risk.
Instead, it creates the cost of being late.
Artificial intelligence is perhaps the clearest example of this acceleration.
Three Questions Every Leader Should Ask
The bridge between today and tomorrow is built one decision at a time.
Leaders who want to strengthen their future readiness should regularly ask themselves three essential questions:
- Which decision are we postponing simply because the outcome is not yet visible?
- Where are people in our organization already relying on AI-assisted decisions—and who is ultimately accountable?
- What kind of reality will our biggest investment create by 2030, and is that the future we actually want?
Organizations that consistently ask these questions develop true future readiness.
Not by predicting what comes next.
But by actively shaping what comes next.
Artificial Intelligence Is More Than a Tool
Many companies view artificial intelligence primarily as a productivity tool.
That perspective is too narrow.
AI is an opportunity to rethink decision-making, redesign collaboration, and reinvent how value is created.
The competitive advantage does not come from the technology itself.
It comes from the decisions leaders make because of it.
The Most Important Decision Is Not About 2050
The real question is not:
What will the world look like in 2050?
The real question is:
What decision will we make today so tomorrow becomes the future we truly want?
We will not live in 2050 according to today's forecasts.
We will live in the future created by the decisions we make today.
The best time to begin is now.
