Motivational Factor: 5 Questions about the Story of Marc Girardelli
1. Mr. Girardelli, with 5 overall World Cup victories, 11 World Championship medals, and 2 Olympic medals, you are one of the most successful skiers of all time. Looking back, is there something you can say was "the key to your success"?
The key to success for me was definitely my determination. I had so many defeats and injuries that would normally make one throw in the towel. But due to the rivalry with my toughest competitors, I had so much adrenaline that always motivated me to the core whenever they beat me.
2. At the age of 19, you became 15% disabled due to a fall, yet you went on to become one of the most successful racers in the history of skiing. How did you manage not only to recover from this setback but to come back even stronger than before?
It was no different then. Coaches from Austria had placed bets that I would never win a race again. One of the doctors who examined me for insurance advised me to "find a job where there are no stairs because with this injury, I will never be able to climb stairs again." These were all motivational factors without which I would never have been able to make it back to the top of the world.
3.Since the end of your sports career, you have been active as an entrepreneur. How have you benefited from your experiences on the slopes in your business ventures?
In my activities with Bemer Therapy Systems, Bomber Skis, my natural cosmetics, etc., I am mostly out in the field. I am a born salesman and networker. I love it because I always meet many great people. And even as a salesperson, you need endurance to handle many defeats, but always remain friendly. Once, for 5 years, I was rejected by a Swiss woman for my tourism magazine (www.alpin-aktuell.com). She never gave me a contract. Then I found out she had her birthday at a fair and no one was paying attention to her. So, I brought her a bouquet of flowers from the gas station for 20€, and since then, I get a contract from her every year.
4. Which commands more respect? The daredevil downhill run or the risky business venture?
100% the ski racing. In comparison, the business life is a very pleasant, interesting activity that, in terms of adrenaline, hardly compares to a mediocre ski race. In business, you can always calculate, make forecasts, and do research to minimize risks. Of course, things go wrong occasionally, but you don't break your neck over it.
5.What helps you overcome your limits every morning?
Just the fact that after a night of an average of 5-6 hours of sleep, I get up again and have a great day ahead of me. Because I used to push the limits of what was possible so much in the past, I am always in the green zone no matter what I do today. Actually, I don't overcome any limits today because no matter what I do, I always see a great opportunity in it. If things don't work out as I envision, who cares! I'll just start something else. The more I tackle, "the faster the train goes," and the more people I automatically meet who offer me interesting things or we develop new projects. It wasn't any different with my recently published crime novel.
