Impact Competence: How to Convince with Presence, Voice and Body Language
Impact competence means consciously managing your presence so that content, voice, body language, facial expressions and inner attitude work together harmoniously in every interaction.
Whether on stage in front of thousands of people, in networks, during coaching sessions or in digital meetings – your impact determines whether you are heard, understood and remembered.
Especially in times of hybrid events, digital networking and virtual presentations, it is becoming increasingly important to create emotional resonance and truly reach people.
This article provides practical tips to help you build your impact competence step by step – based on 30 years of moderation, speaking and networking experience.
The Four Pillars of Impact Competence
My tip as a professional moderator: Train your impact competence systematically – whether for moderation, presentations or relationship building.
This is how you develop a presence that allows you to appear convincing as a moderator, speaker or networker.
1. Build Inner Presence
Inner presence is the foundation of authentic impact. Anyone who is mentally stable and focused automatically appears more confident and credible.
Learning tip
Train your mindset and learn to recognize and manage emotions consciously.
Exercise
5-minute visualization:
Imagine a stressful moment – for example a difficult discussion or a challenging question.
Take a calm breath in and out and say to yourself:
“I am grounded and radiate confidence.”
Repeat this exercise three times per week.
Result
Your authenticity increases. You appear calm, clear and convincing, even in demanding situations.
2. Optimize Nonverbal Impact (55% Impact)
Studies show that a large part of our impact comes from nonverbal communication – meaning body language, gestures and eye contact.
Learning tip
Shape your body language consciously and use it deliberately to build presence and trust.
Exercise
Mirror training (10 minutes):
- take an open posture (chest out, shoulders relaxed)
- hold a power pose for two minutes
- practice eye contact for about three seconds per person
Film yourself with your smartphone and analyze your impact.
Result
You learn how to orchestrate rooms, build rapport within seconds, and maintain attention.
3. Use Voice and Dramaturgy
Convincing impact is also created through voice, rhythm of speech and dramaturgy.
Anyone who uses their voice consciously can charge content emotionally and create tension.
Learning tip
Vary tempo, volume, pauses and tone to create emotional depth.
Exercise
Smartphone recording (5 minutes):
- read a short text aloud
- speak faster for energy
- use deliberate pauses for emphasis
- vary your tone
Listen to the recording afterwards and optimize your delivery.
Result
Your content is delivered in a more exciting, lively and emotional way.
4. Create Resonance and Relationships
Real impact arises when resonance is created.
People remember fewer words – but strongly remember how they felt during a conversation.
Learning tip
Practice active listening and respond consciously to the person in front of you.
Exercise
During your next conversation:
- nod slightly (mirroring nod)
- ask an open question, for example
“What moves you most about that?” - observe your counterpart’s reaction
Reflect after three conversations on what worked particularly well.
Result
Trust grows, and encounters develop into lasting relationships.
Practical Applications: Use Impact Competence Immediately
Impact Competence in Moderation
Build a clear dramaturgy and check the following before every event:
- posture
- voice
- resonance
Guide guests and audiences empathetically from the introduction to the highlight.
Impact Competence in Speaking
Recognize different audience types and adjust your impact accordingly.
Especially during online presentations and camera situations, your presence determines how strongly your message resonates.
Test your content in smaller groups first, then scale it up.
Impact Competence in Networking
Use rapport builders:
- eye contact
- open questions
- genuine interest
After each event, write down your learnings and observations to continuously improve your impact.
Your Training Plan for Impact Competence
Anyone who trains their impact develops a natural and convincing presence over time.
Weekly
Focus on one of the four pillars.
Example: Monday – Inner Presence.
Daily
5–10 minutes of practice and reflection:
“How did I impact others today?”
Monthly
Record a talk or presentation on video and gather feedback.
Conclusion: Develop Impact Competence Intentionally
With continuous practice, your impact competence will steadily grow.
You will appear clearer, more convincing and more memorable – whether on stage, in meetings or in personal conversations.
Because people do not only follow arguments – they follow personalities with impact.
