Holding on wears you out. Letting go makes you strong. 4 bold steps to regain your sense of agency in uncertain times

Why letting go is not about giving up, but about gaining clarity, confidence, and the ability to act in uncertain times.

Holding on wears you out. Letting go makes you strong. 4 bold steps to regain your sense of agency in uncertain times

Letting go often sounds like retreat, sacrifice, or even resignation. Yet the opposite is often true. Especially in times of professional, societal, and personal change, letting go becomes a true future skill. Holding on to old certainties, roles, or expectations often ties up exactly the energy needed for something new.

Letting go does not mean giving up.
It means releasing what holds you back internally: the need for control, perfectionism, outdated beliefs, and the idea that you must have absolute certainty before you can act. Life is not fully predictable. But it is shapeable. And that is where inner freedom begins.

Why Letting Go Matters Today

We live in times of transformation. Digitalization, societal shifts, and economic and political uncertainties mean constant change. This creates insecurity. And precisely then, we tend to cling to plans, habits, and old success formulas. Understandable — but not always helpful.

Sometimes letting go is the most courageous step, because you stop fighting reality. You stop investing energy in things you cannot control and focus on what you can influence: your mindset, your decisions, and your next step.

4 Practical Tips to Practice Letting Go

1. Recognize What You Are Holding On To

Letting go begins with honesty. Ask yourself:
What exactly am I not willing to let go of? A self-image? A belief? A secure plan? An expectation?

Often we are not attached to reality, but to our idea of how things should be. Recognizing this alone is a powerful first step.

2. Distinguish Between Influence and Control

Not everything is in your hands. But something always is. This distinction is relieving. You cannot control every development, but you can decide how you respond.

Instead of asking:
“How do I regain planning certainty?”
Ask:
“What is my next doable step?”

This creates the ability to act — even in uncertain times.

3. Let Go of Perfection and Take Action

Many people wait too long: for the perfect timing, the perfect idea, the perfect plan. But perfection is often just an elegant form of procrastination.

Letting go here means: start imperfectly. You don’t need to know everything or eliminate every uncertainty beforehand. Action creates clarity. Overthinking often keeps you stuck in a loop of doubt.

4. Practice Friendly Thinking

Letting go becomes easier when you stop fighting your own emotions and giving too much attention to your inner critic. Fear, doubt, and uncertainty are not proof that you are wrong. They are human.

Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a good friend: clearly, kindly, and encouragingly.

Letting Go Is the New Taking Action

Letting go is an active decision for inner flexibility. For trust instead of constant tension. For action instead of overthinking.

This is exactly what my interactive keynote experiences and my new book “Letting Go Is the New Taking Action – Courage and Confidence in Uncertain Times” are about. They show how we can avoid freezing in uncertainty and reconnect with our sense of self-efficacy.

Because most of the time, letting go is not the end of something — but the beginning of more clarity, more vitality, and more courage to follow your own path.
