The Current Status of Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Few methods have shaped the further education landscape in Germany as strongly in recent decades as NLP. Praised by many as the most effective technique for change ever developed, and condemned by others with critical comments. What is the truth behind Neuro-Linguistic Programming and where does it stand today?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming was developed in the early seventies at the University of California in Santa Cruz by Richard Bandler, John Grinder, Frank Pucelik, and a large circle of other dedicated individuals. The basic idea was to investigate the methods and approaches of outstanding communication and change experts and model their strategies.
Is NLP Out of Fashion?
Since 1980, there has been a continuously growing number of people in Germany undergoing training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Currently, around 4,000 NLP trainings for Practitioner, Master, Trainer, or Coach are successfully completed each year according to the guidelines of the DVNLP. Between 200 and 300 new NLP trainers enter the market annually. The number of graduates has increased over the years in small but continuous steps. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is neither experiencing a strong boom nor is it out of fashion. Its 50th birthday is approaching soon, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming has firmly established itself. Every year, approximately 10,000 people participate in NLP introductory events and specialized seminars at Landsiedel NLP Training. Only a small portion of them complete a certified NLP training. Most people use Neuro-Linguistic Programming in the contexts of business management, sales, motivation, and personal development.
Is NLP Also Used by Companies?
More and more companies are utilizing Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Leading NLP providers have concluded that around 90% of DAX companies in Germany train with Neuro-Linguistic Programming. However, not all of them openly admit to it. In many companies, the term Neuro-Linguistic Programming is not even mentioned. This goes to the extent that many trainers exclude Neuro-Linguistic Programming from their resumes, yet they still use NLP methods as described in textbooks and sell them under a different label. Ultimately, the human factor and the communication of employees and executives are becoming increasingly important, so companies can hardly afford to ignore effective NLP methods today.
Why is NLP Sometimes Criticized So Harshly?
Criticism comes from various directions. For example, current headlines are focusing on Austrian politicians Haider and Hofer allegedly using NLP methods in TV debates. In the early years, there were headlines about Scientology using Neuro-Linguistic Programming. While these may be true, Neuro-Linguistic Programming is just a tool, primarily used to better understand others and build WIN-WIN relationships. However, like any other effective communication tool, it can also be used destructively and for personal gain. The scientific community has always struggled with Neuro-Linguistic Programming. The approach is so individual that it cannot be fully examined with conventional research methods. Recently, some studies have concluded that Neuro-Linguistic Programming is highly effective. Scientific criticism mainly refers to studies from the 1980s concerning the theory of eye accessing cues in NLP. These studies, however, were based on a false assumption and should not even be mentioned in professional circles anymore.
What Does the Future of NLP Look Like?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a dynamically growing discipline. Currently, the trend is towards further developing old NLP patterns or replacing them with completely new approaches and creating new applications for them. Many people are using Neuro-Linguistic Programming in sales and leadership contexts. However, Neuro-Linguistic Programming has long been infiltrating every area of life.
Through Neuro-Linguistic Programming, it is possible to consistently and goal-orientedly develop one's own potentials. In this sense, I like to refer to Neuro-Linguistic Programming as "Psychology for the Healthy."
In the business context, the modeling approach of Neuro-Linguistic Programming could be even more emphasized. Currently, many SMEs are facing the issue of business succession, and executives are changing employers at an increasingly rapid pace, taking with them a wealth of knowledge that cannot be captured in process descriptions and manuals. Neuro-Linguistic Programming helps to identify the factors of successful executives and salespeople for each company individually and then pass them on to successors using appropriate means.
