The words "My enemy is my friend" could not have opened the 15th Stuttgart Knowledge Forum more fittingly. The sentence that the approximately 3000 participants heard came from the mouth of the rhetoric expert, bestselling author, trainer, and speaker Matthias Pöhm. The words refer to speaking about the fear and anxiety towards people. Turning fear into a friend, that's exactly what Matthias Pöhm did, setting himself the goal of coaching other people. But before he started coaching others, Matthias Pöhm had to coach himself. A key experience was a complete embarrassment in front of all his colleagues: stuttering, failing voice, and sweating outbreaks describe well the state in which Pöhm found himself when he was supposed to speak about the employee representation of his former employer. Many could certainly empathize with the speaker as he dryly recounted his experience. For some, such an experience may be the reason to avoid all presentations, but Matthias Pöhm used this embarrassment as a turning point. Driven to never have such an experience again, he learned the craft of rhetoric. It can get even more embarrassing when speaking in front of potential customers. It doesn't matter if it's a group or just one person. It's obvious that you won't attract new customers if your voice fails and you turn pale. But this no longer has to be a problem. The key lies in awareness. Pöhm explains that consciousness is like an iceberg in the water. Our actions are influenced and shaped mostly by our subconscious. Consciousness carries out what we have decided in the subconscious. Therefore, it is important to keep it simple. You won't turn off potential customers faster by speaking in long sentences filled with commas. With three simple points, you can convince your potential customers, as well as yourself. The speaker relies on pre-declaration: the statement before the statement. With two simple sentences, you can capture your counterpart's attention without embellishing with long sentences. "Now I'm going to tell you..." A sentence that seems so simple that you can hardly believe it has an effect. Yet Matthias Pöhm is right. As he says this sentence, the entire audience is eager, everyone wants to know what is coming next. From his mouth, you hear the words: "Pay attention," the faces of the participants show full concentration. With these two sentences, Pöhm has managed to capture full attention. Following the two sentences is a three-second pause to round off the message. The speaker firmly believes that the message will be better received if rhythmically stretched out and small pauses are inserted. If you believe the speaker, and that's not hard after this presentation, every customer is convinced through a simple approach without embarrassing oneself.
