Resilience Starts with a Decision: What If Giving Up Feels Easier?

This sentence probably describes my journey better than any sporting achievement or record ever could. Because before extraordinary achievements become possible, there is something far more important: the question of how we deal with what life puts in our path.

The Turning Point Came Before the Success

A serious crisis changed my life. It brought me to a point where goals, success and athletic performance were no longer what mattered. First, I had to find my way back to life.

That was when I discovered something that has stayed with me ever since: We cannot always decide what happens to us. But we can influence what we make of it.

My journey eventually led me to endurance sports. I completed more than 200 competitions and 100 Ironman distances. In 2019 alone, I completed 66 Ironman distances within one year.

But the numbers are not the real story.

Great Goals Are Built on Small Decisions

Nobody completes an Ironman simply by getting up one morning and deciding to achieve something extraordinary. Behind every achievement are training, preparation, setbacks and, above all, the repeated decision to keep going.

The same principle applies to our professional and personal lives.

Having a goal is not enough. We have to be willing to embrace the journey – even when things do not go according to plan. If Plan A does not work, we may need Plan B or Plan C. What matters is remaining capable of taking action.

To me, mental strength does not mean never having doubts or never failing. It reveals itself in the decision we make after a setback.

Motivation Needs Passion – and Responsibility

Endurance sports have taught me how much becomes possible when a goal is connected to genuine passion. At the same time, my journey today is about much more than personal achievement.

Whether in a company, a team, a school, a sports club or in the context of inclusion: people grow when others believe in their abilities. Sometimes the greatest barriers are neither physical nor organizational. They exist in our minds.

That is why we should ask ourselves more often: What could become possible if we stopped judging people by their limitations first?

The AHA Moment Comes Before the First Step

When people hear my story, they often remember the extraordinary sporting achievements. But the most important moment happened long before any record.

It was the decision to change my life.

That is the message I want people to take away: You do not have to set a world record today. You do not have to complete 66 Ironman distances either.

But perhaps there is one decision you have been putting off for a long time.

That decision could become your personal starting point.

Bernhard Nuss – From Near Death to a World Record.

How can we find the strength to get back up after major setbacks – and how can mental strength, clear goals and consistent action help us overcome challenges that once seemed impossible?

Bernhard Nuss is a keynote speaker, extreme endurance athlete and ultratriathlete. A near-death experience fundamentally changed his life and led him to endurance sports in 2001. He did not take up triathlon until the age of 51 – and went on to complete 100 Ironman distances within ten years as well as numerous multiple long-distance events around the world. In 2019, the “Iron Franconian” set an extraordinary world record by completing 66 Ironman distances within a single year. Today, Bernhard Nuss transfers the lessons he has learned from extreme endurance sports to professional and everyday life. In his authentic and inspiring keynotes, he demonstrates the power of resilience, willpower, passion and clear goals – and why extraordinary achievement is not where change begins. It begins with the decision to take the first step.
