2019 will be better! This is how to make your resolutions work

Setting New Year's resolutions is still relevant as it helps define desired changes and goals. It's important to be true to oneself and set realistic but challenging goals. Reflect on past resolutions, communicate with others, and pursue personal growth.

2019 will be better! This is how to make your resolutions work

2019 will work with the good resolutions! Really? SWR4 asked mental coach Michael Vaas from Neuler in the Ostalbkreis what New Year's resolutions are all about and how to stay true to oneself and one's goals for twelve months. Experience shows that it is still relevant to set goals for the new year. Many people have goals they want to achieve. For those who set such goals, it is important to figure out exactly what they want to change in their lives, what they are dissatisfied with, and what the desired ideal state should look like.

Is the turn of the year suitable for good resolutions?

The turn of the year is an optimal time. Figuratively speaking, the new year lies before us like a deeply snow-covered meadow: there are no traces or footprints visible, so everyone can carve out their own personal path. Be brave and pursue new goals, because it is your life, and if you don't do it, no one else will!

One could also make new plans on other days, such as a milestone birthday, right?

The start of the year is an excellent time, but essentially any new day in our lives is suitable for that. That's the beauty of our lives, that no one stops us from becoming a little wiser and making changes every day. Since many people set goals and plans at the beginning of the year, it's a topic of conversation, so why not talk about good resolutions with family, friends, or colleagues? Perhaps you can tackle something together or receive support from your environment.

Is it useful to set again what didn't work in 2018?

You should think about why you didn't achieve certain goals in the past. Maybe you don't actually want to achieve a specific goal? It could be that you are afraid of leaving behind beloved things. Perhaps the failed resolutions were also about goals that others expected from you?

Therefore, question yourself exactly about which goals you really want to set and which are just token goals or expectations from others.

When reflecting on past goals, you may realize that some changes have already occurred. But now might be the right time to revisit a past desire.

Is it good to set multiple goals at once?

Write down exactly what you want to achieve, reach, or change by when. It is not a problem to set multiple, different goals. You can set goals in different areas of life: in private life as well as in your professional life, for example. You should definitely keep track and remind yourself of these goals regularly.

Tips from the mental coach

  • Don't take on too much; your goals should be realistic but challenging. After all, you want to step out of your comfort zone and make a change.
