About Deception and Truth in Rhetoric Seminars and What Really Matters
"One should have their speeches written by someone else," someone might assume. "I should acquire some rhetorical techniques," another might think. But the rhetorical reality looks different for some people. Some participants of a rhetoric seminar experience no progress because they struggle to assert themselves against their personal nature. The third attempt fails just like the first. And actually well-conceived rhetoric seminars have already come to an end with all enhanced techniques before the individual has made their first progress.
What is the reason and what should be done?
One participant, deemed "contact-disturbed" by the experienced coach, had both of his parents leave him in the first half year of his life. His surrogate mother passed him on at the age of five. At 48 years old, he had never been in a relationship and when he came to a rhetoric seminar, he stuttered shyly and avoided any eye contact. The "healing" was achieved through reconnecting with his lost caregivers, his hometown, and as a side effect, he entered into the first romantic relationship of his life.
Another leader was sent to a rhetoric seminar with the suggestion that the employee had great expertise but lacked communication skills. This was his last chance. He also stood awkwardly in front of his audience group, and every newly taught technique only intensified his feeling of failure. The solution was found when he mentioned that he had been a German karate master at the age of 26. He stood in front of the group and found his new role: standing like a karate master and teaching his wisdom to his students. This allowed him to connect the energy from his stomach, which had previously only flowed into his hands, with his mouth. Now he could speak, and his boss later thanked him: "A miracle has happened."
A 45-year-old woman with hopes of becoming a leader always presented herself as a student in front of an examination committee during her practice appearances and tried to gain sympathy through kindness. At her age, this approach was already embarrassing. When she realized that due to her expertise, she was now the teacher, the lecturer herself, and her audience the students, she straightened up and could lecture energetically and convincingly.
In all cases, it was only incidentally about rhetorical techniques, but always about personal inner attitudes. This requires not only a seminar with rhetorical techniques, but also an experienced coach who is able to make an accurate diagnosis and develop an individual solution that reveals and activates the existing potential.
"It is of no use to put makeup on a fallen blossom, but one must water the bush from which it originates."
