Have you praised yourself today? Not others, but yourself! Self-praise doesn't stink at all, and besides, you have every reason to do so, says our expert Michael Vaas.
Because today is the time for an interim assessment of your very personal Lent. And what you have already achieved since Ash Wednesday is truly impressive: you have developed a vision of your fasting goal for 2017, devised a strategy on how to achieve the goal, and you are consistently working towards it every day.
Of course, this should continue until Easter, but for personal self-praise, you don't have to wait for your overall victory, rejoice in your today's milestone.
The slight setback from last week? Forget it! Instead, reflect on what has gone well, approach the coming weeks with enthusiasm, and focus on your overall goal. If you work towards it with great joy, maybe you can achieve even more. Turn off your smartphone an hour earlier, add an extra walking round per week? You can realign your goal every day!
But stay realistic, don't put yourself under pressure. Also, do not underestimate the remaining time period, as you want to stay in the game until mid-April. Listen to your gut feeling again: if you feel good, then you are on the right track.
Conversely, you can also dial it back at any time. Perhaps that is also the solution if you are struggling with some setbacks in your current assessment. Before you become frustrated or give up entirely, less can really be more. If you recognize this for yourself and then have the courage to adjust your goal, you can also give yourself a pat on the back for it!
