The Goal is the Way! You all know the saying "The journey is the goal." However, based on my decades of experience as a consultant, the truth is actually the opposite: If we want to achieve success and greatness, we first need to have the right goals. From there, almost always emerges a path on how to achieve those goals. The goal is the way - to success, peak performance, and simultaneous serenity! On May 25, 1961, the then US President John F. Kennedy uttered a crucial sentence before the American Congress: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." With this clear yet visionary goal, he set an entire nation in motion. The result is well-known: On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. The goal was even achieved earlier than Kennedy had set. Goals have this almost magical power! They motivate, inspire, capture an entire organization, and sometimes even a whole nation. This is fantastic and can be highly effectively utilized for your success. In decades of research and consulting, we have discovered the secret of super-successful companies: They consistently work on every level with goals. In my seminars, I still encounter many participants who are unaware of the two crucial criteria for the right goals: measurability and achievability. If you cannot measure your goal, it is not a goal! As for achievability, it goes like this: we overestimate what we can achieve in a very short time. But we underestimate what we can achieve in a long time. Becoming the market leader in a year will not work for most companies. But if you give this goal seven years, the chances are very different. We have implemented the topic of goals step by step in our various companies - with breathtaking results. Since then, we have won numerous awards and achieved quantum leaps in our revenues and profits. We became winners of the most prestigious German business award, the Ludwig Erhard Prize Competition, because we were the only ones in Germany who consistently pursued the goal process. Indeed, there is a mysterious power in working with goals, we have experienced it. And you can too! But the most fascinating thing is: since this change as a leader, I have a much more relaxed life. Because everyone in the company knows which goals are crucial for success, this system runs almost automatically in everyday life. I can focus on strategic tasks, while the jointly agreed-upon goals take over the leadership. It is really that simple! On the other hand, I am sure: if we had not worked so consistently with goals and goal agreements at tempus in the past twenty years - we probably would not exist today.
