The Secrets of Motivation

Everyone can start the day with enthusiasm and dedication

Being motivated is more than just a nice bonus. It turns challenging work into exciting and fulfilling hours, motivates us to learn Italian or go jogging with enthusiasm, and transforms maintaining friendships from a sometimes tedious task into experiences we wouldn't want to miss. But how do I motivate myself day after day? Above all: How can I succeed even when things aren't going smoothly? First of all: Everyone actually has to give themselves the necessary input. Intrinsic motivation is significantly more effective and sustainable than incentives coming from outside. While the latter often quickly lose interest, the former burns permanently because personal values and ideals come into play. It is therefore up to each individual how motivated they want to lead their life, with how much energy they want to approach conversations, projects, relationships. And that's a good thing because no one has to wait for help from others. Although this increases their responsibility, it also increases their influence on their own satisfaction. As a speaker and trainer, I repeatedly experience how much a successful life depends on one's attitude. And this is also crucial when it comes to motivation. Believing in being able to inspire oneself, lift oneself out of a rut from time to time, makes one open to self-motivation tricks. And there are plenty of them. It's worth exploring! After all, it's not just about success in a job, which is unthinkable without enthusiasm, but also about positive results in all other areas. So what is the secret or what are the secrets of motivation? The first one: inspiring goals. These should be generally achievable, not utopias, but not easily achievable either. Every New Year's Eve, I write down my major personal and professional goals for the year at the front of my calendar. On the one hand, this forces me to clarify what I want to achieve in the near future. On the other hand, over twelve months, I create effective motivators that I can look at repeatedly. Yes, look at them, because I complement the verbally formulated goals with appropriate drawings or images to make them even more memorable. Having a motto for the year also helps to motivate especially during tough times. In combination with the yearly goals, such a philosophy illustrates why full commitment pays off. Suddenly, work is experienced as enjoyable again, even more routine tasks are done with vigor when one vividly imagines the overarching goals in colorful and detailed ways. Of course, this doesn't prevent moments of exhaustion, but there is a remedy for that too. A good strategy: Write down the "three diamonds" of the past 24 hours at the end of each day. These are positive events, ranging from a nice conversation with a colleague to uplifting bird chirping in the morning. Those who make recording such "gemstones" a ritual quickly realize how rich almost every day is. A more motivating insight is hard to imagine!
