The climate change discussion - Is it hysteria?

Climate hysteria was chosen as the Un-word of the Year for discrediting climate efforts and questioning scientific facts. Despite alarming environmental changes, individuals can make a difference by adopting a leaner, more sustainable lifestyle aligned with climate goals.

The climate change discussion - Is it hysteria?

Climate hysteria has been chosen as the Un-word of the Year. Because it discredits climate protection efforts. And because scientifically proven facts are being questioned. That's according to the jury at the Technical University of Darmstadt. But let's take a closer look: Should we really be hysterical? Recent studies show that in the past 25 years, the world's oceans alone have absorbed an amount of energy due to the greenhouse effect that is 3000 times the global annual electricity production. Australia is burning, tropical rainforests could reach a point in 5 years where they not only shrink but also become drier, leading to the overall death of the rainforest. Biologists note that we are currently in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event in Earth's history, caused by humans who are exploiting every resource to the maximum. Not only oil and gas, cobalt or water, even sand for building houses and roads is becoming scarce. No offense, but all of this sounds threatening, it sounds somehow unstoppable, and one may wonder: How will things continue, with the planet and with us humans? From this perspective, it is not surprising if some people react hysterically. Especially when, even today in 2020, a significant part of humanity sees the facts but is hesitant to take action. It seems so hopeless, what can I, as an individual, do, I won't act until everyone else does, and anyway: I'll buy an SUV because it's more comfortable to get in, and I'll go on a cruise because I deserve it. These climate change fanatics should not shout so loudly, after all, they consume too. And one thing is clear: I am not willing to be catapulted back to the Stone Age. They're crazy. It's just some politicians trying to rip us off. Yes, it won't work out like this. From this perspective, one might almost become hysterical. However, in reality, one doesn't have to. On the contrary. Yes, we have a lot of problems, our environment is changing, and we cannot turn back time. However, we can also acknowledge that the status quo, our current way of life, is far from perfect. The state of humanity, the environment, and the life of the individual are still significantly improvable even in 2020. Especially in times of climate change. Currently, this world is getting obese. People are much less likely to die from hunger than from the consequences of obesity. Our lives are getting obese, the cars, the living spaces, and our leisure activities too. We get many of the things we want. But is that good? If you have children, you know: Just because your child gets every wish fulfilled easily, doesn't make them happier. On the contrary. Those who get everything quickly can quickly turn into "spoiled brats" (I apologize in advance for the wording, but you surely know what I mean). Societies worldwide are behaving a bit like this pattern. Are we all becoming more and more dissatisfied because of this, even though we are living healthier, wealthier, more educated, and safer than ever before in human history? Wouldn't it be much better if we aimed for a world that becomes leaner and more athletic? Where we have to strive more for our goals again? I claim: We would surely be happier, and incidentally, all of this can be aligned with the goals of "Fridays for Future" and the concerns of scientists worldwide. That would indeed be sustainable. So, shall we tackle it?
