Professor Claus Hipp was born in Munich in 1938. Whilst still studying, he was entrusted with the management of the family farm in 1960 that is still in operation today. After completing a PhD in law, in 1963 he joined his father’s company that manufactures baby foods. The HIPP company has been manufacturing baby foods for over 100 years now and has more than 1,000 employees. HIPP obtains its ingredients from approximately 6,000 bio-farmers. In the meantime, the manufacture of top quality products in harmony with nature has become the company’s philosophy. He has been the HIPP operations’ personally liable partner since 1968. Claus Hipp is the vice-president of the German Conference of Chambers of Industry and Trade (DIHK) and professor at the state art academy in Tiflis in Georgia. The HIPP company has symbolised a conscious and sensitive relationship with nature, mankind and business for over five decades. This means that Claus Hipp personally has from the very beginning stood as guarantor of the quality of his company’s products.

Themen

Professor Dr Claus Hipp deals in his talk on the subject of “Ethics in Business Life”.

The central message of the talk:

“Only ethical behaviour leads to long-term business success”
Medium-sized family companies find it easier to act in accordance with long-term ethical principles than do public limited companies. According to Professor Hipp, most medium-sized German companies act in accordance with ethical values. He is also of the opinion that the emphasis on individual interests in large companies unfortunately leads to over-regulation by the state that would not be necessary were businesses to act ethically.

“Our young people have considerable potential to renew society, business and politics on an ethical basis”
The university’s mission is to convince young people that only persistent and fair conduct brings sustained success. The speaker uses the educationalist Pestalozzi as a model in bringing up the young. The cardinal virtues of wisdom, justice, courage and moderation ought to be a company’s guiding light.

“HIPP’s Ethics Charter as a central benchmark in HIPP’s company policy”
The Ethics Charter has been the basis of HIPP’s ethics management since 1999. It includes the subjects the market (quality, customers, suppliers, competition), the employees, the state and the environment.
