Arved Fuchs is the first person to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole on foot within a year. The polar explorer attracted international attention with daring expeditions such as the first winter circumnavigation of Cape Horn in a folding boat or the crossing of the Atlantic in a sailing boat. Fuchs was enthusiastic about polar research from an early age. He completed his training in the merchant marine in order to learn the necessary skills for his later expeditions. He studied ship operating technology at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences until the intermediate examination and then went into business for himself. Since 1977, his expeditions have taken him to the extreme zones of the Arctic and Antarctic. In 1981 he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing boat, in 1983 Greenland by dog sled and in 1984 he circumnavigated Cape Horn in a folding boat in winter. In 1989 he became the first person to reach both the North and South Pole on foot in one year. Arved Fuchs has been observing and documenting the advancing climate change on his adventures for many years and is committed to improving it. In 2005, the adventurer was awarded the Tilman Medal of the Royal Cruising Club (RCC) and in 2008 the Golden Plumb Line of the Association of German Surveying Engineers.
