Bernd Raffelhüschen works at the universities of Freiburg and Bergen, Norway. He is a sought-after political consultant and speaker on population development, pension reform and social security in general. In particular, in the debate about the future of German pension, health and long-term care insurance, he has repeatedly shown the courage to put forward controversial theses. As a member of the Rürup Commission, he was one of the pioneers of the red-green pension reform. He is also a member of the Committee for Financial Science of the Association for Social Policy and of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Walter Raymond Foundation of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations. In 2005, he became the second board member of the Market Economy Foundation in Berlin. He is responsible for the subject area of "social security" and deals with demographic developments and their consequences for old-age provision, health and care. Bernd Raffelhüschen studied economics in Kiel, Berlin and Aarhus (Denmark). After completing his doctorate, he researched as a visiting research associate at Boston University, USA, and at the University of Bergen, Norway.

In April 2004, Raffelhüschen received the “Schader Prize,” the most highly endowed award for social scientists in Germany.
It is awarded for outstanding contributions to the practical relevance of the social sciences.Since 2011, he has been publishing the German Happiness Atlas and also gives lectures in this field.
