As President of the BDI, Hans-Olaf Henkel triggered a broad discussion about the right economic and socio-political course in Germany with his call for a new approach and more flexibility. Prof. Henkel was born in Hamburg in 1940 and trained as a forwarding agent. He went on to study economics, business administration and sociology at the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics. Within a very short time, Hans-Olaf Henkel took on management positions at IBM. After more than thirty years with IBM in India, Southeast Asia, France and the USA and finally as IBM Europe CEO with 90,000 employees, Prof. Henkel was voted “Ã-komanager of the Year” in 1992.Hans-Olaf Henkel was President of the Federation of German Industries for five years from 1995 and then President of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association until 2005. In 2014, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament. There he represents the ALFA party within the ECR Group. Prof. Henkel is a sought-after speaker at events and conferences.
