In 1973, Ulf Merbold joined the Max Planck Institute for Metal Research in Stuttgart. Initially a research fellow, he became a staff member after completing his doctorate. His work there focused primarily on solid-state and low-temperature physics. After various roles at the European Space Agency (ESA), Merbold became the first non-U.S. citizen to fly on a U.S. Space Shuttle mission in 1983. Since 2004, he has been officially retired from active spaceflight but continues to serve as a consultant to the ESA and regularly gives lectures on the topic of "Science in Space."
